RAMALLAH/GAZA CITY, 30 July 2007 — Prime Minister Ehud Olmert yesterday announced a new $30 billion US defense aid package to preserve Israel’s regional military superiority, as he appreciated Washington’s wishes to boost moderate Arab states through weapons sales.
“This is an increase of 25 percent for the military aid to Israel from the United States. I think this is a significant and important increase in defense aid to Israel,” Olmert said at the opening of the weekly Israeli Cabinet meeting.
Olmert added that the aid package was offered during his meeting with US President George W. Bush in Washington on June 20.
“This would mean a lot to Israel’s security, and this is a good opportunity to thank President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice,” Olmert said.
Other Israeli ministers stressed during the Cabinet meeting Israel’s need to secure its “quality advantage” over its neighbors in the Mideast and the US’ major role in maintaining this advantage.
“Defense aid to Israel is still a top priority for the United States,” Olmert told the Cabinet, adding that Israel enjoys more financial assistance than other countries in the Middle East.
“We have renewed agreements and a renewed commitment from the Americans that would help preserve our advantage over the Arab countries,” Olmert said, referring to reports by the New York Times and the Washington Post that the US is mulling a $20 billion arms deal with Gulf states and increasing military aid to Egypt to $13 billion over 10 years.
The deal with Gulf states includes advanced satellite-guided bombs, upgrades to their fighter jets and new naval vessels. It has reportedly raised concerns in Israel and among its supporters in the Congress. However, Olmert said that Israel fully understood the US’ need to support the moderate states in the region.
“We understand the US’ need to assist the moderate Arab states, which are standing in one front with the United States and us in the struggle against Iran,” Olmert said, referring to its nuclear program.
Israeli security officials called the increase in military aid “an unusual achievement.”
According to Israeli diplomatic sources, the final details about the new aid package to the Jewish state will be worked out during the visit by US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns to the region, adding that his visit is slated for mid-August.
US defense aid to Israel began in 1973 but a regular 10-year aid plan — with the previous one expiring this summer — was institutionalized in 1977 as part of the Egypt-Israel peace agreement, the official said.
The military aid is made up of 75 percent US military hardware, ranging from ammunition to warplanes, with the other 25 percent in cash, which goes mainly toward securing new Israeli-made weapons.

Greens: Bush has no credibility on Iran, but Democrats and Republicans are lining up behind Bush's next military disaster
WASHINGTON, DC -- Green Party leaders strongly cautioned that the combination of a $30 billion military aid package for Israel and growing threat of a US or US-backed Israeli attack on Iran could trigger a major regional conflagration in the Middle East.
"There's little doubt that the $30 billion in US taxpayers money sent to Israel will be used for two things: to maintain Israel's illegal and murderous military occupation of Palestinian lands, and to prepare for a military assault on Iran," said Paul "zool" Zulkowitz, a member of the Green Party's Peace Action Committee (GPAX). "The new military aid for Israel and the Lieberman-Kyl amendment, passed on September 26 with strong bipartisan support, have brought the the US closer to war with Iran."
Greens stressed that White House claims that Iran is assisting Shiite militias in Iraq and plans to produce nuclear weapons for possible use against Israel or western nations have been contested. Iran has denied such intentions; Greens noted that such use would amount to suicide for Iran.
"The Bush Administration, after its deceptive rationales for invading Iraq, should have no credibility on Iran or any other foreign policy," said Justine McCabe, Connecticut Green and co-chair of the party's International Committee. "Unfortunately, Democrats -- especially presidential candidates like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama -- have signed on to the AIPAC-Neocon-Republican line that an attack on Iran is 'not off the table.' If a global war starts because Bush ordered an attack, it'll be a bipartisan disaster, like the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and the continuing Middle East crisis."
In one scenario, confirmed by Newsweek, Vice President Cheney considered asking Israel to launch a missile attack either on a nuclear power site in Natanz, Iran, or on an alleged Syrian-Iranian-North Korean nuclear installation in northern Syria, which might result in a retaliatory strike that would motivate a larger US military assault on Iran. Israel has already launched an air strike on the suspected Syrian site in September.
"The Lieberman-Kyl amendment designates Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as a 'foreign terrorist organization.' The amendment makes the Iran military a target in President Bush's 'war on terror.' This is a major step towards a military confrontation with Iran, whether the attack comes from the US or Israel or both," said John V. Walsh, delegate from the Massachusetts Green-Rainbow Party to the Green Party's National Committee.
The Green Party has called for an international effort towards nuclear disarmament of all Middle Eastern and western Asian nations, including Israel and Pakistan, which are known to possess nuclear weapons, as part of a greater global nuclear disarmament project. Greens have called the Bush Administration hypocritical for condemning Iran while expanding US nuclear weapons programs and after removing the US from antinuclear treaties. The party has called for the US to rejoin the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, and eliminate American nuclear weapons. Greens have also accused the Bush Administration of squandering pro-US sentiment that exists among many Iranians in its attempt to vilify their country.
The Green Party has sharply criticized both Democrats and Republicans for maintaining support for Israel's six-decades-long violations of civilian human rights and bowing to the demands of AIPAC and certain Christian rightwing lobbies that the US endorse the Israeli government's military ambitions and ethnic policies. (Israel has placed the Gaza Strip under siege and threatens to cut off water and fuel supplies, to punish civilians over rocket attacks launched by militias.)
The Green Party calls for negotiation by both sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; a cut-off in US military aid to Israel; and an economic boycott of Israel until the latter recognizes full human rights, including the right of return for Palestinians and abolition of internal apartheid laws. Greens have called for support for Israeli and Palestinian groups seeking peaceful resolution, observance of human rights, and a halt to all violence and coercion directed against civilians.

07/26/03: Yesterday, a 4 year old Palestinian boy was killed at an Israeli checkpoint, simply because he was riding in a truck when an Israeli soldier opened fire with a machine gun. The soldier also wounded two little girls. An Israeli government spokesperson said it has no apology and “after an investigation” that nothing was done wrong!
It is apparently legal and acceptable for an Israel soldier to shoot and kill an innocent 4 year old boy!
Lately, it seems this is standard operating procedure for Israeli soldiers in Palestinian areas and checkpoints; one has but to look at the newspapers over the past two weeks to see the proof for this astounding fact.
This is an outrage. How can the Zionist Jews who run Israel not remember how Hitler brutalized them in the 1930s and 1940s? Why should they take Hitler’s methods and now use them against the Palestinians? Why is the world standing by and allowing this holocaust to take place, calling the Palestinians who have no tanks, planes, helicopters or heavy weapons, “terrorists”, while the Israeli military destroys children, women, homes, hospitals, schools, mosques with planes, rockets, missiles, helicopters, bulldozers and bloodthirsty soldiers at checkpoints where the Palestinians are unarmed, helpless and obviously wanting only to get through their day safely?
Has the world gone mad? Does GW Bush and the rest of the US government, our congress, our senate and most of our mass media not see the truth of what is going on? How can they deny it? Are they not moral enough to be outraged? Are they blind and dumb?
Is this what happened when Hitler was killing the Jews, Poles, Russians, Czechs, Slavs and Bosnians during the 30s and 40s and in WWII? Did we turn a blind eye then?
Were the German politicians as demented and ill-informed as Tom Lantos and others who call Palestinian children, “terrorists,” while Israeli soldiers slaughter them with heavy weapons? Has America totally lost any moral sense? Any moral outrage? Is Helen Thomas right when she says, “America has lost its moral sense.” We may have more people going to church, but is it being lived out in our lives?
I fear we have lost our moral compass, because this has been going on for over 30 years, with American aid and complicity. We have sided with the devil in this one, from the time of Menachem Begin to Ariel Sharon, we have sided with the killers, and condemned the victims.
Surely, if there is a God, and I believe there is, his wrath will come down on us, as it should. We know of the Holocaust, but are not stopping this new one—WHY?
But let not this wrath come down on those who stand against this terrorism from Israel’s Sharon, for there are Jews in Israel and Americans who stand against this wholesale barbarism—let the punishment come down on those guilty of standing by, those abetting this slaughter, those keeping women and children, from water, from hospitals, keeping them locked up in house arrest and martial law so that they cannot even get food, or earn money to buy food. Let those who stand by and allow this to go on, those who abet it, like Tom DeLay who calls the victims, “terrorists” and is going to Israel this week to collect more money and to receive awards for blessing these killings of innocents.
How men like him can say they are Christians, can say they are moral men—is beyond me. They lie to us and they lie to themselves; there is no reason, no matter what titles these liars sport that we should believe them. We should not be like them and lie to ourselves, nor should we be afraid to say these truths aloud. If we fear speaking the truth, then we too are lost.
It is time we all stood up to the liars in our media and in our congress, senate and in the White House and say, “No more, no more—Israel must stop this barbarism, this Hitlerian behavior or must be condemned and cut off from any aid from the United States and its allies in the world.” If we do any less, then we are complicituous in this new holocaust, and no parades, no visits to the Jewish Holocaust Museum or saying, “It’s God’s will”, will justify our shirking our moral duty to stand up and demand this stop.
If not, then America will be as vulnerable as Israel to attack all over the world, from not only Palestinians, but from Muslims who have had enough of brutalization of the Palestinian people. It is judgment day; let us hope the American government makes the right decision and soon, if not, then all hell will rain down upon us.

Irena Sendlerowa (de domo Krzyżanowska) was a Polish Catholic nurse who saved 2,500 Jewish children in the time of the Shoah (the Holocaust) in Nazi-occupied Poland.
Irena Sendler 1910-2008, a Righteous Among the Nations, saved 2,500 children in Warsaw. Irena Sendler was a nurse at a Catholic hospital when Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939. As a nurse she was able to enter the ghetto. Irena Sendler was smuggling children out of the Warsaw ghetto to Polish Christian families. To preserve the identity of the saved children she wrote down their true names and hidden the list in jars. The jars with 2,500 names were buried in a garden. Irena Sendler was arrested by Nazis in 1943. She was tortured but she has revealed no names.
IRENA SENDLEROWA: When I saw what's going on--I just decided to act.
Irena told guards a child has typhus and needs to be taken to hospital to prevent epidemics. Sometimes she cooperated with janitors of a courthouse that stood at the ghetto's border, so children could be led by janitors through long corridors towards freedom.

Irena Sendler 1910-2008, sprawiedliwa wśród narodów, uratowała 2500 dzieci w Warszawie. Irena Sendlerowa była pielęgniarką w katolickim szpitalu, gdy rządzone przez nazistów Niemcy napadły Polskę w 1939 roku. Jako pielęgniarka miała prawo wchodzić na teren getta. Irena Sendlerowa przeszmuglowała dzieci z getta, by je ukryć u chrześcijańskich rodzin, u polskich współobywateli. Dla zachowania tożsamości dzieci spisała ich imiona i nazwiska, a listę schowała w słoikach. Słoiki z 2500 nazwisk zakopała w ogrodzie pod drzewem. Irenę Sendlerową nazistowskie gestapo aresztowało w 1943 roku. Mimo srogich tortur, nie wydała żadnych nazwisk.
IRENA SENDLEROWA: No i jak się tam znalazłam i zobaczyłam, co się dzieje, to postanowiłam się zająć tą sprawą [tj. ratowaniem Żydów].
Irena mówiła strażnikom, że dziecko zapadło na tyfus i musi je odwieźć do szpitala, by nie dopuścić do epidemii. Współpracowała też z woźnymi sądu na ul. Leszno, gdyż stał na granicy getta, i tak woźni przeprowadzali dzieci korytarzami do drugiego wyjścia na ul. Ogrodową - na aryjską stronę.

בהמשך התחילה להבריח ילדים מן הגטו למנזרים או אל משפחות נוצריות, באמצעות ניירות מזויפים שהסדירו להם במחתרת. לחלק מהילדים סיפרו שהוריהם היהודים הם מאמצים, כדי להקל עליהם את הפרידה מהוריהם. חלק מהילדים הוברחו בשעות הבוקר המוקדמות מתחת למושבי הנוסעים בחשמלית שחצתה את הגטו. חלקם הוסעו במכונית פרטית אשר היה בה גם כלב. אם בכו הילדים, היכה הנהג את הכלב ונביחותיו החרישו את בכי הילדים.
אירנה סנדלר הקפידה על רישום מדויק של הילדים שהבריחה מן הגטו, כדי שאפשר יהיה לאתרם בסוף המלחמה ולהשיבם למשפחותיהם. את הרשימות הטמינה כדי זכוכית באדמה בגן ביתה. בסך הכול הצילה בדרך זו כ-2,500 ילדים יהודים.

Irena Sendler has died peacefully on May 12th, 2008, in Warsaw, Poland.

Irena Sendlerowa (de domo Krzyżanowska) była Polką, katoliczką, pielęgniarką. Uratowała 2500 żydowskich dzieci w czasie Zagłady, która nastąpiła podczas nazistowskiej okupacji Polski.
Irena Sendler 1910-2008, sprawiedliwa wśród narodów, uratowała 2500 dzieci w Warszawie. Irena Sendlerowa była pielęgniarką w katolickim szpitalu, gdy rządzone przez nazistów Niemcy napadły Polskę w 1939 roku. Jako pielęgniarka miała prawo wchodzić na teren getta. Irena Sendlerowa przeszmuglowała dzieci z getta, by je ukryć u chrześcijańskich rodzin, u polskich współobywateli. Dla zachowania tożsamości dzieci spisała ich imiona i nazwiska, a listę schowała w słoikach. Słoiki z 2500 nazwisk zakopała w ogrodzie pod drzewem. Irenę Sendlerową nazistowskie gestapo aresztowało w 1943 roku. Mimo srogich tortur, nie wydała żadnych nazwisk.
IRENA SENDLEROWA: No i jak się tam znalazłam i zobaczyłam, co się dzieje, to postanowiłam się zająć tą sprawą [tj. ratowaniem Żydów].
Irena mówiła strażnikom, że dziecko zapadło na tyfus i musi je odwieźć do szpitala, by nie dopuścić do epidemii. Współpracowała też z woźnymi sądu na ul. Leszno, gdyż stał na granicy getta, i tak woźni przeprowadzali dzieci korytarzami do drugiego wyjścia na ul. Ogrodową - na aryjską stronę.
SZEWACH WEISS (były marszałek izraelskiego parlamentu): Teraz idąc do Boga, na pewno się zapyta Boga: "Boże, gdzie ty byłeś w tych okropnych czasach [Zagłady]?". I Bóg jej powie: "Byłem w twoim sercu".

אירנה סנדלר נולדה ב-15 בפברואר 1910 באוטבוצק, בת לרופא בעל השקפות סוציאליסטית, שרוב מטופליו באו מקרב תושביה היהודים של העיירה, השוכנת כ-20 ק"מ דרומית-מזרחית לוורשה.
בראשית מלחמת העולם השנייה הצטרפה לפעולות הסיוע ליהודים, בחלוקת מזון, דאגה ליתומים וסיוע כספי לאנשים, שהנאצים החרימו את רכושם.
בשנת 1942 עבדה כמנהלת בכירה בעיריית ורשה, במחלקת הסעד. היא הצטרפה לארגון "ז'גוטה", שפעל מטעם הממשלה הפולנית הגולה בלונדון בסיוע ליהודים. כינוייה במחתרת הפולנית היה יולנטה ועיסוקה העיקרי שם היה בהצלת ילדים יהודים. היא סיכנה את חייה בפעולות חילוץ והצלה בעזרת אנשים שגייסה לעזרה, עסקה בזיוף מסמכים שהקנו ליהודים שמות נוצריים והשיגה אישורי מחלה, שנועדו להרתיע את הנאצים מהתפשטות מחלות מידבקות. יחד עם העוזרת שלה, אירנה שולץ, נכנסה לגטו בעילה של טיפול בחולים וכך הבריחה לשם כסף, מזון, תרופות ובגדים.
בהמשך התחילה להבריח ילדים מן הגטו למנזרים או אל משפחות נוצריות, באמצעות ניירות מזויפים שהסדירו להם במחתרת. לחלק מהילדים סיפרו שהוריהם היהודים הם מאמצים, כדי להקל עליהם את הפרידה מהוריהם. חלק מהילדים הוברחו בשעות הבוקר המוקדמות מתחת למושבי הנוסעים בחשמלית שחצתה את הגטו. חלקם הוסעו במכונית פרטית אשר היה בה גם כלב. אם בכו הילדים, היכה הנהג את הכלב ונביחותיו החרישו את בכי הילדים.
אירנה סנדלר הקפידה על רישום מדויק של הילדים שהבריחה מן הגטו, כדי שאפשר יהיה לאתרם בסוף המלחמה ולהשיבם למשפחותיהם. את הרשימות הטמינה כדי זכוכית באדמה בגן ביתה. בסך הכול הצילה בדרך זו כ-2,500 ילדים יהודים.

Hoping to establish a non-Communist post-war government in Poland, the decision was made for the Polish Home Army to attack the Germans in Warsaw in advance of the Red Army, with the understanding that Soviet reinforcements would be available if needed. Indeed, the Red Army entered the Warsaw suburb of Praga, across the Vistula River, late in July, 1944.
The Uprising: On August 1, the Polish Home Army General Bor-Komorovski, with a force of between thirty-five and fifty thousand partisans, attacked the Germans in Warsaw. Joined in the fight by the city's Polish population, they took control of most of the city by August 4. But the Germans sent reinforcements: S.S. police units, a brigade of Russian ex-prisoners, and a brigade of ex-convicts, all of whom Hitler had previously ordered removed from the front because of their excessive brutality. The Polish forces became fragmented and isolated. The Germans pursued the cut-off fighters into the city's refuges--burned out buildings, and sewers--where virtually all the Polish forces perished.
During the sixty-three days of fighting the Red Army, encamped within sight across the Vistula, never attempted assistance. The Soviets refused permission to the Americans and British to use their airfields to drop ammunition and relief supplies. In September, when a German victory seemed certain, the Russians allowed a small amount of ammunition to be dropped in, but it was useless: it was made for Soviet armaments and did not fit the Poles' weapons.
When hostilities ceased, eighty-five percent of the city was razed, and the Polish Home Army annihilated . The Germans deported the remaining population. When the Germans were eventually defeated there were no forces left to oppose Soviet political domination in Poland.

Borrowing Money For Israel: Annual Interest Alone Exceeds $3 Billion

The double dip recession has now become so grave that the American people are demanding that President George Bush direct his attention to the sorry state of the domestic economy. Foreign aid, notoriously unpopular with the US public in recent years, has become doubly so in this period of economic distress.
Even if Congress fails to react to the disquiet about foreign aid, it is likely that the bloated US grants to Israel in particular will no longer be exempt from public scrutiny and that they will be looked upon as a bad congressional choice between responding to domestic fiscal needs and yielding to AIPAC, the Israeli lobby.
Part of the taxpayers' resentment against the practices of the federal government has been sparked by the manner in which Congress appropriates money, particularly foreign aid. Foreign aid generally is allocated through "continuing resolutions," without a ''yes" or ''no" vote on particulars. Key committee members then allocate 40 percent of the worldwide total of US bilateral foreign aid to Israel and Egypt. Aid to Egypt climbed to roughly two-thirds of that to Israel as a result of the US-brokered peace agreement between the two countries.
Grants for foreign aid are especially noteworthy because they amount to giving away borrowed money. The case of Israel over the last 40 years is the most astonishing. Every dollar given to Israel has been money borrowed by the US Treasury from private lenders, domestic and foreign. As the Treasury debts are interest-bearing, the Treasury has' had to borrow more money year by year to pay the interest on the outstanding debts incurred by the grants to Israel, plus interest on the earlier interest.
By the end of the fiscal year 1990, such US borrowings, starting with a modest grant to Israel of $ 100,000 in 1951, totaled $32.111 billion for the grants themselves, and an additional $21.351 billion in accumulated interest, for a total of $59.565 billion.
In FY 1991, annual interest alone on that $59.565 billion cost $3.246 billion at the average Treasury rate of 5.45 percent. Thus the grants made to Israel for FY 1991, officially reported as $5.256 billion, actually cost US taxpayers $8.502 billion in FY 1991, when the $3.246 billion in interest is included.
This lopsided situation will continue in FY 1992, when $3.491 billion in interest will be added to the cost of the FY 1992 grant of $3 billion, which already has been paid to Israel in the first month of the fiscal year. This FY 1992 outlay, general details of which are summarized in the table below, does not include any part of the $10 billion in US loan guarantees requested by Israel, consideration of which was deferred for 120 days at the request of President Bush last September.
If the deficit financing of subsidies to Israel were to continue for 10 more years at the $3 billion minimum rate per year and at five percent interest, the total debt undertaken by the United States would be $155 billion and the annual interest payment after 10 years would be $10.7 billion, more than three times the annual grant of $3 billion. This is an annual total of almost $14 billion, or more than $3,000 per year per Israeli. With this prospect, it is clear that borrowing ever-increasing amounts of money to give to Israel on an annual basis for the indefinite future will be unacceptable to the American public.
